DIT/Enable Ireland Community Design Challenge – Sponsored by Leckey

12th February 2013

The Community Design Challenge was the original idea of Bernard Timmins a lecturer in DIT (Dublin Institute of Technology).  Bernard was approached by a young girl with a disability who was keen to be involved in design solutions for people with disabilities. This inspired him to develop an idea where people in the community with a disability could provide design students with real life insights into their daily challenges and together create innovative designs for assistive technology.
Working with Enable Ireland and in partnership with DIT the Community Design Challenge was born! The 2013 competition was launched on 3rd December at the Microsoft Offices in Dublin by Enable Ireland and DIT in partnership with Noel McQuaid, Technical Director at James Leckey Design
This challenge is open to all students from all design and engineering related disciplines, both nationally and internationally.

The Challenge - Design for “ability" not disability.
Leckey are delighted to be the sponsor for the 2013 Community Design Challenge. Being involved in this competition gives us the opportunity to give something back to those people in the community with disabilities as well as helping encouraging young designers and engineers to realise the rewards of working in the Assistive Technology industry.
The challenge we have set for students is to design to maximise “ability", the goal is to “enable” children and adults of all levels of ability to live their lives to their full potential. We are asking students to imagine how you could adapt, improve, integrate or augment any of Leckey’s current products or create new ones, to make them fun, engaging and beneficial for a person with disability, and as a consequence help remove the stigma of disability.
Keeping in mind Leckey’s mission, vision and values we want to see innovative solutions to real life issues which could result in a new product or service which could be a mechanical, electronic or even software based solution. There’s no limit to your creativity!

Prize for winning concept €500.
