Our Clinical Manager, Clare Canale, recently attended a COT accredited Postural Care workshop run by Dr Eve Hutton at Canterbury Christchurch University.
The one day workshop represents the culmination of Eve's research becoming evidence-based practice (you may already be familiar with her 'A-Z of Postural Care Booklet). The workshop uses a train-the-trainer format to teach occupational therapists and physiotherapists to deliver a postural training programme "for parents, teachers and teaching assistants, who are responsible for the daytime postural care needs of children with a physical disability".
The workshop focuses on delivering the training, based on a framework of self-efficacy - a strategy for adult learning - and participants are provided with all the information needed to run their own workshops, including ongoing support from Eve and the whole research team.
There was a lovely mix of OTs and physios attending the course, with a range of experiences and clinical backgrounds. Those working in, or responsible for children in mainstream schools, will find the workshop particularly beneficial, but the training is flexible enough to include special schools too.
