Samantha
Samantha gains improved arm and hand function with KIT’s Pelvic Cradle
Samantha is an 11 year old girl with a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy Spastic Quadriplegia. Currently Samantha uses a self propelling wheelchair and a classroom chair. However this provides insufficient pelvic and chest support. Samantha likes to move her arms and hands but this was disturbing her posture, in turn making it more difficult for her to use her arms.
Clinical Assessment
- Samantha has thoracolumbar scoliosis concave to the left, with a hump on the right
- She has a poor head position
- Her pelvis is high on the left and rotated back on the right
- Samantha’s legs are windswept to the left with a leg length discrepancy of approx 10cms
Approach
Samantha requires a seating system which provides as symmetrical a position as possible with her head in the midline, allowing her to engage in tray top activities and socially interact with her family and peers.

The Kit Seating System’s 3 part backrest meant that Samantha’s shoulder, thoracic and sacral supports could be individually tailored to allow maximum support and comfort, moulding around her rib hump.
Also, the complex lateral supports were used (left side mounted vertically, right side mounted horizontally) together with hip guides to provide 3 point loading to accommodate Samantha’s scoliotic posture. Samantha was able to actively move her head and trunk and regain midline stability.
