Upright Stander for Children and Teens
Posture & Function
Research has shown that standing can improve bone density, motor abilities and reduce spasticity, tone and spasms.
Pelvic stability is as important in standing as in sitting, because the trunk, head, and legs have to be in alignment in order for standing to be comfortable and therapeutically effective.
The pelvis is held in a secure and stable position by the fully adjustable pelvic belt. An optional solid pelvic plate can be added where firmer anterior support is needed.
The belt and plate work together to de-rotate the pelvis, giving the best base of support over which to stabilise the trunk and head.
The pelvic belt and plate work together to keep the pelvis in a midline position relative to left and right, to ensure weight is distributed as evenly as possible.
Trunk and Head Alignment
As in sitting, trunk and head support contributes to the stability of the pelvis in standing, enhancing arm and hand function, concentration and social interaction.
The angle adjustable chest support provides trunk support for the upright position.
Where children have a tendency to hyperextend, the contoured head support and hyperextension pads can be fitted to help maintain an upright posture.
Where additional support is needed to keep the head in midline, a range of Whitmyer head supports can be attached.
Leg and Foot Positioning
Active weight bearing contributes to the development of the hip joint. It is essential that legs and feet are appropriately positioned to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit.
An adjustable knee plate and cups ensures the knees are securely and comfortably supported at the correct height for each child.
The low footplate eases standing transfers while the sandals ensure stable and secure foot positioning.
The Freestander is designed to promote independence and function in a number of ways.
The tray with its useful bowl, height and angle adjusts to encourage optimum upper limb and hand function.
To encourage eye gaze and visual tracking, toys can be suspended from the optional grab rail.
Where additional stability for upper limbs is needed, optional grab posts can be attached, improving the functional use of the dominant hand.
