KIT Seating System
Modular Mobility Seating for Teens and Adults with Special Needs
“Seating systems are aimed at providing an appropriate level of postural support for each user, as well as offering comfort, skin protection and stability to enable daily functional activities to be carried out. As postural control is a pre-requisite for most functional tasks, the inability to control posture has a significant effect on function.”
Pelvic Stability
The most important feature of any seating or mobility system is its ability to align or accommodate a range of pelvic positions. This gives the best possible base of support for trunk and head alignment, and arm and hand function.
Unsurpassed proximal pelvic positioning can be achieved using the Pelvic Cradle.
Adjustable Velcro side tabs provide an anterior pull, giving support at the posterior of the pelvis and sacrum, and facilitating optimal pelvic positioning.
Submarining under the anterior strap is prevented by the anatomical positioning of the harness attachment points.
Hip and Sacral Support
The hip pads are individually height, angle and width adjustable, and along with the sacral pad, give pelvic correction or accommodation of unique body shapes.
Hip pads can be asymmetrically adjusted for users with complex needs.
Regardless of the set up of the backrest, the hip guides can be rotated to remain horizontal with the femurs and seat base.
The ability of the sacral pad to rotate and contour to those with spinal rotation ensures balanced contact between the back support and buttocks.
Trunk and Head Alignment
Trunk and head support contributes to the stability of the pelvis and facilitates arm and hand function, concentration and social interaction.
KIT’s 3-part backrest, along with optional thoracic supports can support and accommodate some of the most complex users’ unique needs.
Fixed scoliosis can be comfortably accommodated using multi-adjustable complex lateral pads which distribute pressure more evenly.
Shoulder protraction and improved head stability can be achieved using the shoulder protraction system and contoured headrest.
Leg and Foot Positioning
Tight hamstrings and unsupported feet can contribute to instability of the pelvis, and therefore the alignment of the trunk and head.
Up to 20° windsweeping can be accommodated as well as real or apparent leg length discrepancies.
The foot supports can be positioned behind the knees taking the strain off tight hamstrings and promoting pelvic stability. The leg guides can be adjusted for leg length differences including those caused by a fixed pelvic rotation.
Internal/external rotation, varus/valgus and plantar/dorsiflexion can be accommodated by the multi-adjustable foot supports.
Function
Although the KIT Seating System is designed to maximise abilities through providing stable positioning, a number of additional features further improve function.
KIT’s ability to accommodate windsweeping and spinal rotation means that the user can be fully supported while the trunk and head face forward, improving opportunities for social interaction.
This level of support combined with the large tray, improves the potential for fine motor activities and independence at meal times.
For those who use augmentative devices, communication systems can be easily attached to the KIT Seating System’s seat base.
